Dr. Abdul-Azeez A. Anjorin currently serves in the training and career development committee of the World Society for Virology, and as a member of the Governing Board for Middle East, Eurasia & Africa- Influenza Stakeholders Network (ME’NA- ISN). He is the General Secretariat Support Officer of the African Virologists Network, and the Coordinator/ Principal Investigator for African Infectious Disease Multidisciplinary Research and Grant (AFIDMURG). He was the immediate past Head, Department of Microbiology and the Team Leader for Influenza & Other Respiratory Tract Viruses (IORTV) research at the Lagos State University.
He received the Global Virus Network (GVN) training scholarship for Emerging Leaders in Virology at the Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine; Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore; and National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA. He was also trained at the Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC), Argonne National Laboratory, University of Chicago, Lemont, Illinois. He earned a PhD in Medical Microbiology/Virology from the College of Medicine/ School of Postgraduate, University of Lagos; and a training fellowship at the Luxembourg Institute of Health WHO influenza reference Laboratory. He had a further training at the ISIRV/ Christian Medical College (CMC) Respiratory Virus School in Vellore, India; and received the INGSA Africa Science Advice Skills Development Program Training Fellowship.
He has presented papers in different countries in Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, attending over 50 conferences and workshops including different WHO functions like WHO Consultation on scientific framework for epidemic and pandemic research preparedness (2024); WHO Global Research and Innovation Forum (GRIF) on building the world’s resilience against future outbreaks and pandemics (2023); and WHO R&D Blueprint consultation on improving vaccine effectiveness studies: A vital step before the next pandemic (2023).
Dr. Abdul-Azeez has served as a Consultant to MSD and partners on biosafety to WACOT company, and NCDC as Subject Expert on Dynamic Risk Assessment for Nigeria on Respiratory Infection in Europe. He is a facilitator for AFREhealth STRIPE HIV training, as well as lectures at the World Bank sponsored ACEITSE. Abdul-Azeez sits on the Editorial board of PLOS ONE journal as an Academic Editor, and Associate Editor of the Pan-African Medical Journal. He is the President of the Lagos State University Muslim Alumni (LASUMA), and the General Secretary of the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA).
He was the LOC Publicity Chairman, and a Member of the Scientific Committee for African Virologists Conference (AVC) 2024. He has served as an Associate Editor/ Editorial Board Secretary of Journal of Research and Review in Science (JRRS) (2020-2024), Moderator, Series 3.1 on Genomics and translational research in Africa: Local Vaccine production; & the Nigerian Molecular Laboratory Network in 2022, LOC Secretary for LASU Faculty of Science International Conference (FOSIC) 2022; & Chairman, Theme & Abstract Review Committee, FOSIC 2020.
He was the Global Emerging Pathogens Treatment (GET) Consortium 2024 Moderator- From Ebola to COVID-19 panel discussion, as well as the African Virologists Conference (AVC) 2024 Moderator on Monkeypox in Africa panel discussion. He successfully hosted LASUMA 2024 AGM, and has served as the Guest Speaker at the WHO Collaborating Global Center for Mass Gatherings Medicine, Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health 5th International Conference for Mass Gatherings Medicine, Hilton Riyadh (2023).
